Holidays for the soul: where do Uzhgorod people go?
It seems that the city is at least asleep, if not dead at all: the rate of laziness has reached its climax and the holiday season continues. Sun, sea and air are our best friends, this we know since childhood. However, when choosing a route for the holiday, we are not always guided by this principle. Vacationing can be different, as known Uzhgorod residents have shown us. We asked active and interesting Uzhgorod residents what a vacation can and should be like, and made a list of different ways and routes.
Tudor Kilaru: After Tuscany - to Peru
The most famous presenter of Transcarpathia Tudor said: holiday is a constant motion, and here he also shows his explosive nature and refuses to lie on a beach. He says that it is better to explore.
"For me, there's no such thing as vacation, because I have no fixed schedule, so I try to relax whenever I have a free time. The best way to change the environment is going to music festivals or concerts in the summer. I rarely use services of travel agencies, and rely only on my own experience or desire. In winter I was in a kind of tour through Scandinavia, Germany, Holland and Belgium, in spring I tried ski slopes of Italian Dolomites and recently I visited my favourite eternal city of Rome, where I rented a car and drove through Tuscany to Florence and then plunged headlong into the civilization of Naples. This fall I am going to realize my dream - go all the route of Che Guevara from Argentina to Peru."
Fedir and Oksana Vashchuk: Diving and skiing with family
Oksana Vashchuk, the Director of Uzhgorod Institute of PMU NAS of Ukraine and the wife of the Rector of Uzhgorod National University, says that a major key to a successful holiday for the family is being together rather than careful planning, geography and entertainment. "The main motto of our family holiday is relax together! We love active rest, Alpine skiing is must have of winter holiday. In our family everyone ski - both adults and children, and our favorite ski resort is the High Tatras - on weekends we get out there with children and grandchildren. As for summer holidays, we prefer the sea. Usually it's Turkey or Côte d'Azur. There we also have an active rest - beach volleyball, water skiing, scuba diving.
Andriana Sushko: Crimea and freedom
The head of Labour and Social Welfare Department of Uzhgorod City Council Andriana Sushko stays faithful to Ukraine, namely to Crimea. "I always plan my annual leave for summer to take my daughter to the sea. When planning a summer vacation I always opt for the Black Sea - Crimea, Mykolaiv, Odessa. This year's choice is the resort in the town of Karolino-Buhaz. During the holidays I was impressed by many dolphins that were swimming next to us almost at arm's length. The locals told us that in July dolphins always swim to the spit stretching along the coast.
Pavlo Chuchka: Formula for 4 seasons
The politician, social activist, writer and entrepreneur Pavlo Chuchka, whom we managed to "catch" while he was relaxing in Kherson region between Azure and Iron Ports, quotes Lenin and describes the formula of recreation for all four seasons.
"Summer vacation is motion, more fruits, vegetables and less familiar faces around. Definitely at sea. Wherever there is minimum civilization. Ten days would be enough. In autumn I like to travel to small towns in Ukraine, Slovakia, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Serbia, in a word wherever I understand local language and street landscaping is clear and attainable here in Transcarpathia. And I think that the universal formula for relaxation is (quoting Lenin): Change of activity is the best vacation."
Sasha Popovich: Family and hobbies
Journalist Oleksandr Popovich is convinced that the best vacation is time spent with family... Also Sasha knows how to preserve the taste for life amidst of everyday life.
"It does not matter whether it is quiet family evenings when everyone is at their computers reading or watching something interesting. Still it is followed by a discussion in a circle on a wide couch. Or it is watching a movie or playing board games with family friends. Or maybe a trip somewhere in search of adventures in Transcarpathia. In fact, we love to go somewhere together. However, it happens not as often as we would like. Recently, all of us attended the festival Shipot 2013 and enjoyed it very much. But most importantly - we were together.
As to how to relax while staying on the job, there is a simple way. You must have a very exciting hobby (hobbies) and switch to it in between work. It really helps to relieve the brain and significantly improves the quality of life."

Valentyn Shtefanyo: Sweet French dreams
Confectioner, chocolatier Valentyn Shtefanyo complains: so far, sweet dreams about vacation are unattainable. "This year it is also unlikely. I have a lot of work. I'll try to compensate for it the next year. Of course, I make short trips, and even on vacation, but so far, a "normal" holiday - long and with family - is only a dream. The last time I had one like that was three years ago (for the first time in 10 years), and there were cons - I wanted to be away from people, and got into an "ant hill". I believe that a good vacation must be carefully planned."
Valentyn told what kind of vacation with the family he dreams about: "I wish we went to the French coast - in Honfleur, Deauville and Trouville. This is a very beautiful and interesting region.
Mykhailo Kolodko: For inspiration
Sculptor Mykhailo Kolodko lives as follows: holiday is part of the job. An artistic profession implies the inner need to acquire new experiences, learn and see things that would become a source of ideas for future work, projects, sculptures.
Here is what Mykhailo says: "For the last probably five years, the work and rest in my life go hand-in-hand. There are days when I can or have to get away from work in the studio or trips to the sites where my works are mounted. Or go to places where I want to see some sculpture or monument. Recently, I've had a few such trips with vacation. I am working now on two projects. One of them is the return of the name of amazing artist, father of the expressionism Tyvodar Chontvari-Kostka to Transcarpathia. The museum dedicated to him is in the Hungarian town Peych. I went there together with a team of like-minded people on the expedition aimed to closely explore creative achievements of this artist. This was made possible thanks to the Consulate General of Hungary in Uzhgorod, consuls Josef Bachkayi and Endre Salipski. To implement the second project - the fountain in Vynogradiv's twin city Eger - I have visited the city several times. Now we are building a twin fountain there, similar to that opened in Vynogradiv last year. These trips provide a break without leaving work.
Oleksandr Koval: Transcarpathia and again Transcarpathia
A teacher of UzhNU and tourism expert Oleksandr Koval, naturally, promotes vacation in Transcarpathia and convinces that it's not only cheaper, it's really interesting. However, this year, as in the two previous ones, he will rest at the seaside of Montenegro, because the only thing that Transcarpathia can not substitute for is a seaside climate.
"In Transcarpathia, in my opinion, there are 3 kinds of holiday a) relaxation at camp sites, hotels or objects of rural tourism in Transcarpathia b) active leisure (tents, rural tourism, hiking or cycling tours or car journey), c) treatment and rehabilitation at health centers." He gives the example of a memorable active tour, which he has recently made with like-minded cyclists: a great experience, minimal expenses.
Larysa Lypkan: Sun and pyramids
A journalist Larysa Lypkan, though admires and likes to travel to Europe, this year, has chosen a hot Egypt. She explains the reasons.
"When planning a vacation, I take into account three factors: the amount of the budget, the opportunity to visit places where I have not been yet, and the state of mind at the moment, that is the understanding of what I want - to cloister, or spent time with a good company. This time I was vacationing with friends in Egypt. I was very pleased: good service (which is what you need, when you go with children), the most beautiful sea I've ever seen, and a wide range of excursions.
