The disaster in spruce forests: in Rakhiv district, spruce trees are withering en masse. In the Goverla forestry in area of 5776 ha, according to forester Stepan Paparyha, about 2 thousand hectares of forest are affected by the disease. Mostly, those are trees whose age reaches 160-200 years. According to Stepan Paparyha and Volodymyr Prystupa, the Director of the State Enterprise "Rakhiv Forest Research Farm," there are several reasons for this, most importantly – the old age of the trees and pests, mainly eight-toothed bark beetle. The foresters say there is only one solution – timely removal of infected trees from the forest and planting healthy trees in the territory.
