Czech Republic will not block new sanctions against Russia

Czech government will not block the introduction of new sanctions against Russia, but considers the discussion on this topic premature because of a relative truce in the Donbas.

This was reported by the UNIAN citing the First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Peter Drulak.

"We have never blocked sanctions, we want them to be effective, so as long as they are effective, we will support them," – he said.

Drulak noted that effectiveness means primarily that the restrictions imposed should do more harm to Russia than to the EU member states.

However, he did not comment on what should happen in Ukraine to make the EU begin the discussion on strengthening its sanctions against Russia.

Earlier Drulak said that the practice of sanctions indicates their little efficiency, but noted that it was "the only tool" that the EU can use in the conflict of Ukraine and Russia. In his view, this is a pragmatic approach.

Earlier, the Czech Republic opposed the imposition of sanctions against Russia.
