Criminal charge has been instituted against the customs officer, who hit a cyclist to death

On September 2 Uzhgorod interdistrict prosecutor opened a criminal case on the accident involving an employee of Chop Customs as a result of which a cyclist was killed (Part 2 of Art. 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

As Uzhgorod interdistrict prosecutor Ivan Tsar informed, on Saturday, Sept. 1, about 9 PM law enforcement officers received information from Uzhgorod resident that near the bridge over the river Latorytsya on the "Chop-Kyiv" highway nearby "West" gas station, the driver of "Mitsubishi Space Star", which was moving towards Uzhgorod hit a cyclist.

Later it turned out that the "Mitsubishi Space Star" was driven by the 40-year employee of Chop customs. The driver lost control and hit a 43-year old cyclist. As a result of his injuries, the cyclist died on the spot of the accident.

According to the press service of Chop Customs, the officer followed all traffic rules.

However, the Criminal Code of Ukraine provides that the offense under Part 2 of Art.286 – violation of traffic safety or operation of transport that caused the victim’s death or caused serious bodily injury, – shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term of three to eight years, with disqualification to drive vehicles up to three years or without it – informs the press service of the Prosecutor’s Office of the Transcarpathian region.
