Bribe taking customs officer was sentenced to 5 years

Transcarpathian customs officer, who last year took a 17,800 dollars bribe and because of this got to the fourth place in the Forbes.ua ranking, has been sentenced to 5 years imprisonment.

As previously reported, June 26, 2012, the Prosecutor of the Transcarpathian region opened a criminal case against the head of the customs post "Tisa" of the Chop customs for solicitation and receipt of bribes in the amount of 17,800 dollars   (Part 3 of Art.386 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine), also the criminal case against the businessman, who had given the bribe, was initiated (Part 2 of Art.369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

It was found out that in the evening of June 25, the head of the Chop customs department B. in his own apartment in Uzhgorod received from the businessman a 17,800 dollars bribe.

In exchange for this money the customs ofiicer promised by using his position to promote the smooth customs clearance of goods belonging to subjects of foreign economic activity entering Ukraine through the customs post "Tisa".

The customs officer’s guilt was completely proven in court.  However, taking into account all mitigating circumstances, the judge of Uzhgorod district court sentenced him to a five years’ imprisonment with disqualification to hold public office in customs office, institutions, enterprises and organizations of state and municipal property related to the implementation of organizational and regulatory and administrative and economic functions.

Thus, the now former customs officer will be freed from the main sentence, if within three years of probation he does commit a new crime.

The person, who had given the bribe to the customs official, was also found guilty in court. He was also sentenced by court to 5 years imprisonment with a probation period of two years. The sentence is enforceable.
