Uzhgorod authorities declared their readiness to co-finance the restoration of the children’s railway. According to the Zakarpattya online, this was discussed at the meeting of the regional center officials with the chief engineer of Uzhgorod rail transportation office of Lviv Railway Igor Volsky.
According to the publication, the city government is ready to participate in reconstruction work, but only on the conditions of co-financing, as these expenditures are not provided for in the budget for 2016, and the children’s railway currently is on the balance sheet of the "Ukrzaliznytsia".
Given this, employees of municipal services will inspect the area, steps, fences, trees (80% are in poor condition), Uzhgorod city council informs.
Meanwhile, the page of the children’s railway on Facebook confirms the possibility of resumption of such an important for tourist image attraction: "From reliable sources, we have learnt about the decision of Lviv branch of the UZ to resume the activity of Uzhgorod children’s railway. The decision was announced by the acting head of Lviv branch Mr. Hrunyk at the meeting with the head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration Mr. Moskal. Currently, repairs are being conducted at the station – they are restoring the cars, and the locomotive will be replaced with an operable one from the Borzhava narrow gauge railway. On the initiative of concerned activists, on Friday, June 3, 2016, there will be a meeting at the station at 12.00."
Recall that Uzhgorod children’s railway was closed in 2009. The management of the UZ estimated that it was unprofitable and therefore suspended its financing and support.
