A pedestrian and bicycle corridor to Slovakia will be opened in Uzhgorod

As part of the reconstruction of the checkpoint "Uzhgorod" at the Ukrainian-Slovak border, the construction of the crosswalk for pedestrians and cyclists has already been completed.
A pedestrian and bicycle crossing at the checkpoint "Uzhgorod" existed up until 2007. In 2007, it was closed for temporary reconstruction and it was planned to build a new pedestrian corridor and reopen it half a year later.
But it has not been opened yet. Back in 2016, when it became clear that the EU would cancel visas for Ukrainians and that would lead to large queues at the borders, the then head of the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration Hennadiy Moskal appealed to the Ukrainian authorities with the request to immediately restore pedestrian and bicycle crossing at the checkpoint "Uzhgorod".
By 2015, Slovakia had completed the reconstruction of its pedestrian and bicycle path on their part of the checkpoint. In total, Slovaks allocated EUR 1.7 million for the reconstruction of the checkpoint Vysne Nemecke-Uzhgorod. They made the path and expected Ukraine to do the same.
Moreover, the Slovak government even sent a note to Ukraine. But our government kept delaying.
Even some of the deputies of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine asked the government to make an effort to restore the pedestrian and bicycle crossing at the checkpoint "Uzhgorod".
The government then assured that the crossing point would be restored as part of a major European project for reconstruction of Ukrainian border crossing points at the borders with the European Union.
But only in the beginning of 2019, the funds for the reconstruction of the chackpoint "Uzhgorod" were finally allocated. The work began. The contractors promised that they would do it in a proper and timely manner. Even promised that the reconstruction would be completed in the autumn of 2019.
But it’s already 2020, and there is still a lot of work to be done. Nevertheless, the pedestrian and bicycle crossing at the checkpoint will be restored. They have already laid out the pavement and installed a fence along the pedestrian crossing.
That is, if there is a will, the pedestrian crossing can be reopened even today. But, most likely, it will be restored only after the entire reconstruction of the checkpoint and solemnly opened with the appropriate officialdom.
