A campaign against artificial wreaths and flowers has launched in Transcarpathia

October in Transcarpathia is traditionally the time of preparation for the November memorial days
During the month, people visit the graves of their relatives and fix them up. Of course, they do not go to the cemetery empty-handed, they carry candles, flowers and wreaths. That is why October, especially its last two weeks, break all records in terms of the amount of last year’s waste collected in the cemeteries. The bulk of it is the waste of ritual paraphernalia – plastic wreaths, flowers, lamps and more.
Last year, the utility, which takes care of two Uzhgorod cemeteries – in the village of Barvinok and on the Kalvaria Hill – reported staggering figures: every day in the last two weeks of October, utilities remove about 15 trucks with last year’s waste which mostly comprises of large plastic wreaths. Just imagine the magnitude and consequences of such a thoughtless pollution of our land!
The religious communities of Transcarpathia have been working together for several years in order to reduce the use of plastic ritual paraphernalia. The Ecology Commission of the Mukachevo Greek Catholic Diocese and the Ecology Commission of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine have developed and began to systematically disseminate information leaflets that urge anyone who comes to the cemeteries not to bring plastic rubbish to the graves. The Secretary of the Ecology Commission of the Mukachevo Greek Catholic Diocese, the Head of the Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies, Oleksandr Bokotey told the "Pro Zahid" that the Church is trying to solve this problem based on the Christian ecological doctrine. Source.
