In Transcarpathia, the Security Service of Ukraine caught another border guard, who facilitated smuggling of cigarettes for bribes

Officers of the Special Forces of the Security Service of Ukraine Office in Transcarpathian region together with the regional prosecutor’s office stopped the illegal activities of an inspector of the border guard service department "Tisa". He was recently appointed to the post under the rotation made at this customs post after high-profile detentions of Hungarian border guards last year. In particular, this border guard has established illegal scheme of extortion from local residents for unimpeded smuggling of cigarettes by vehicles across the state border of Ukraine.

          The extortionist set an illegal fee of 2000 UAH for each border crossing with cigarettes. He would never take the money personally – for illicit enrichment he opened a bank account in his relative’s name. In this way, he received from just one local resident 8 thousand hryvnia of undue advantage for his services.

On April 14, 2016, officers of the Security Service of Ukraine Office in Transcarpathian region detained the border guard after a free passage of another batch of cigarettes.

Urgent operational-investigative measures are being taken. The pretrial investigation under Part 3 of Art.368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine has been initiated.
