90-year-old Transcarpathian volunteer received the award “For merits to Transcarpathia”

Katerina Omelchak received the award of the Regional State Administration "For merits to Transcarpathia". She received the award for her outstanding contribution to the development of volunteerism, helping military personnel, who perform tasks in the area of the anti-terrorist operation in the east of the state, and on the occasion of International Volunteer Day.

Mrs. Katerina is the oldest volunteer in Transcarpathia, because she has been taking care of the military unit in Uzhgorod for more than two decades. The 90-year-old woman visits young soldiers, supports them with warm words, and during major religious holidays brings all kinds of specialties to their table. When the war in the country began, Katerina Omelchak became actively involved in volunteer activities. Every month, she donates most part of her small pension to help the defenders of the state.

The woman sends postcards to the front, in which she supports men in the spirit of patriotism and Cossack valour. Those soldiers, who are known in Ukraine as the legendary 128th mountain infantry brigade, call Katerina Omelchak their guardian angel.

— Now is a time of trouble. But we must not give up, must not worry. We must go down this thorny road and support our young generation, our defenders of Ukraine – the volunteer said when accepting the award.
