500 kilos of jam was cooked at the Hecha festival

On August 26 in Beregovo district village of Hecha the VI Jam Festival was held. Thick jam is traditionally made in Transcarpathia with plums of "venherka" variety.

The cooking process starts early in the morning.      One needs to cook plums for 12 hours or more, while stirring constantly in 70-100 liter boilers.

Jam is ready when the mass becomes almost black and thick. This jam can be stored in cans or clay pots for over 10 years.  It is cooked without any sugar.

Half-liter jar of jam cost about 30 UAH. This year’s festival was hindered by an incredible heat.

Also, a contest for the best jam was held. In evaluating finished products jury took into consideration several criteria – cooking technique, texture of the finished product and its taste.  The winners received a trip to Greece (for 7 days), provided by a Hungarian travel agency.
