How to survive the heat – doctor’s advice

Ukraine suffers from the heat. Last weekend, in some regions, the temperature rose to 35-37 degrees. Doctors warn: this heat is dangerous for everyone – especially for people with cardiovascular disease.

The director of the Center for emergency medical care and disaster medicine in Kyiv Anatoliy Vershyhora told a correspondent of the Ukrinform how to reduce the impact of heat.

"Due to high temperatures and direct sunlight, there is increased risk of heat stroke especially for children. Also, the risk of heart attacks increases for adults with cardiovascular disease because of a tendency to blood thickening"- Vershyhora warned.

During the heat, the doctor advised, inter alia, to take drugs rich in potassium, eat more fresh fruit, not to drink alcohol and caffeinated beverages, often ventilate the room and beware of direct sunlight. "Diet should be mostly vegetarian. Vegetables and fruits of any kind. It is advisable not to eat fat and meat products, ie to exclude all protein foods from the diet," – Vershyhora said.

According to him, it is also useful to wash hands and face often, and, if possible, to take a shower several times a day. It is important not to sit under the air conditioner for a long time, lest to get sick.

"In an emergency, if a person becomes sick, in order to improve body ventilation, you can put cold compresses on the frontal and groin areas, remove shoes and tight clothing. If a person is unconscious, move him or her to a shaded place, remove or loosen the clothing, rub his or her temples with ammonia and let him or her sniff it. Be sure to call an ambulance," – Vershyhora advised.
